This week one of our volunteers, Trustee Robin Donald has been at a tools & equipment conservation course held at the Scottish Mining Museum and organised by STICK, Scottish Transport & Industry Collections Knowledge network.
Tidying up your herbaceous borders?
If you are splitting any clumps of herbaceous plants Cousland Smiddy Trust would be please to receive them for selling at plant sales for smiddy funds. Please leave at the smiddy patio, potted, and named and with the colour of the flower would really help when we come to sell them on. Hoping to have a plant sale at May or June community cafe and at Village Day in August so if you are growing anything on that might be spare we'd be happy to have that too. Members of Cousland Local History Project were invited to 'cross the border' into East Lothian and took part in the EL Heritage Gathering on Saturday 25th February at Haddginton Town Hall. Cousland was once in Haddingtonshire so we are pleased to be considered honorary East Lothianers!
We were delighted to welcome twenty five 2nd year product design students and their lecturer from Napier University, to the smiddy today. The students are embarking on a project which will see each one design a hand forged companion set, along with costing & marketing it as a unique craft product. The final designs and submissions will be part of their course work, with some of the designs potentially being put into production and made available for sale. Truly one off's!
Well what a wonderful Doors Open Day we had yesterday - welcoming over 100 visitors to the Smiddy & Hub. We had folks from all over, including one man who had taken the train & bike from Aberdeen for the day especially to come and see us! Well done sir! Huge thanks go the the volunteers who helped on the day and beforehand. We certainly couldn't do it without you. Special mention for the guys who had to abandon putting up tents on Friday evening because of the forecast high winds, but turned up at 8am the next day to get everything in place.........and we made it by the skin of our teeth, the first visitors arriving bang on 10.00am. We did have a small 'tonic' at the end of the day - just to wind down you understand! Today Fay & Sheena welcomed 4 very special visitors to the Heritage Hub - Meet Lynne & David Cousland and Nancy & Jim Cousland! (They say Coosland in Lichfield & Sacramento!) We were very pleased to be able to show them round.
